Simple Recipe for Chawli, also known as cowpeas or black-eyed peas

Today we learn and know about Chawli (black-eyed peas):

Chawli, also known as cowpeas or black-eyed peas, are commonly used in Maharashtrian cuisine. 

One popular recipe is "Chawli Usal," Here's a basic recipe:

Ingredients:

1 cup dried cowpeas (chawli)

1 large onion, finely chopped

2 tomatoes, chopped

2-3 green chilies

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tsp cumin seeds

1 tsp mustard seeds

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

1 tsp red chili powder

1 tsp coriander powder

Salt to taste

Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Oil for cooking

Water as needed

Instructions:

  • Rinse the cowpeas thoroughly and soak them in water overnight or for at least 6 hours. Drain the water before cooking.
  • In a pressure cooker add the soaked cowpeas along with salt and water. Stir well. Close the pressure cooker lid and cook for about 3-4 whistles or until the cowpeas are tender. Keep it aside. 
  • Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once they crackle, add cumin seeds.
  • Add chopped onions and fry it until it gets light golden colour
  • Add minced garlic Sauté for a minute until fragrant.
  • Add chopped tomatoes and green chilies. Cook until tomatoes soften.
  • Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and coriander Powder and mix well. 
  • Add salt according to your taste. 
  • Add cooked chawli. Mix well again and cook for a minute. Turn off the heat. 
Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
